Turmeric is considered healthy and is widely consumed as a dietary supplement.
The turmeric (Curcuma longa) plant is very well known in Africa. The root is harvested, cleaned, dried and powdered as a spice (turmeric gives curry its beautiful golden yellow color) and used as medicine.
It comes from South Asia and is widely cultivated in the tropics.
Fresh turmeric powder has a resinous, slightly burning taste, when dried it tastes mildly spicy and slightly bitter – it is mainly used ground because of its coloring power, for example as an essential component of curry powder. Turmeric is much cheaper than saffron, which also has a strong yellow color.
